Why do small cars cost the same as big pickup trucks?

I went to my local Chevy dealer and they want the same amount of money for for a Chevy Malibu, as they do for a Chevy Silverado. Why would someone pay 25k for a Malibu when you can get a big roomy extended cab pickup for the same price?
