What type of animal is best for me?

I live in a roomy apartment, and am in search for a pet. Since i live in an apartment i can't have a dog or a cat. Whatever the thing, i want it to be exotic and not particularly to expensive. The only thing I'm really afraid of or don't want would have to be spiders,fish, or birds. I want to be able to hold it. It can be a reptile or something fluffy.... but not hamsters. Again something unusual would be great. Any advice would be awesome I am dedicated to do as much research on the animal as needed. I don't want it to grow to large either, but a medium size would be alright. Preferably I would like to find it in a pet store but, not something many people have. Please feel free to give me options :D thanks
